Morning mist in the Hafren Forest
This is the third and final part of the "Hafren Trilogy", the result of a very productive overnight visit to the Hafren Forest on the slopes of the Pumlummon hills in mid-Wales. I'm very close to the location in which I recorded the Nightjar last night, but it is now dawn and, over the gentle backdrop of the stream, we hear the bright song of a Robin, closely followed by a Cuckoo. Being June, it's quite late in the Cuckoo's season and there are some variations on his typical two-tone song, as the old rhyme goes:
The Cuckoo comes in April,
He sings his song in May.
At the end of June he changes his tune,
In July he flies away.
We're at the "changes his tune" stage here, and I like to call the "cuk-cuk-cuk-koo" variation, "Crazy Cuckoo"! There are at least two cuckoos singing intermittently here and they're easy to tell apart becaue of their very different pitches.
Also present here are Goldcrest (Europe's smallest bird), with his high-pitched repeated "tiddly-tiddly-tiddly" song, Chaffinch, Song Thrush and, at the very end, Coal Tit and Wood Pigeon. There are a few other species buried in the mix too but, overall, the song is less frenetic and more relaxed than earlier in the season: a gentle end to our night in the Hafren Forest.
Although prepared & edited at the time of recording, I actually forgot to post this recording in June and only now, in early September, have I discovered my omission. "Better late than never" as we say!
