Looking out to sea at Welcombe Mouth, Devon.   Photo: Jo Turner

I spent the new year with friends on the Cornwall-Devon border & on New Year's Day we decided to go down to Welcombe Mouth, a small cove looking out over the Atlantic Ocean.   I hadn't planned on making any sound recordings, though I always carry a small rig with me just in case. But the weather was mild & still and so, while my friends were cooking food further up the beach, I wandered around listening for an interesting soundscape.

The incoming tide was gently lapping its way up through the rock gulleys and, having found a good spot, I perched on one of the striated rocks and handheld the mic for as long as I could without getting my feet wet! This turned out to be around 16 minutes, just long enough to get a good recording of the close up trickling water with the roar of the Atlantic in the background: a sonic memento of the day.   And I couldn't help making a pun on the name "Welcombe"!
