I'm once again in the Elan Valley, near to where I live; but this morning I'm a few hundred metres from my usual spot, and in a more open area of oaks where a Redstart is singing from a branch high overhead.
Redstarts (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) are very common here in mid-wales during the summer months. They arrive in april/may and establish their breeding territories before departing again for warmer climes in September. Although male Redstarts are often the first birds to sing in the morning, this recording begins once the chorus is in full swing. Besides the Redstart, there's a backdrop of other birdsong, including the distinctive call of a Wood Pigeon about 17 minutes in. The occasional distant sheep also makes itself heard: this is Wales, after all!
